Tackling Teacher Incentives (Without Spending a Dime?)

Posted by Ta-Nehisi Coates of the Atlantic, Cynic makes some interesting points here. I don’t really agree that lowering the barriers to entry for teaching is a good idea, in fact, I would rather see them raised. I do however, think a blending of seniority and competence makes sense for how teachers are paid. Even better, let the schools and the teachers that work in them figure out how to fairly distribute pay.

There is an incentive problem in the teacher career path. To me, however, the major issue isn’t financial, although changes in the financial structures of teacher pay might help. The incentives that will motivate young and excellent teachers are opportunities to be agents of tansformative, creative, generative change.
